Reopening Planning Overview

The Special School District Board of Education is reviewing COVID-19 community health data and has considered proposed timelines for the return of students and staff to SSD’s schools and programs.
The Board of Education has decided to begin phased reopening of SSD’s schools and programs according to the timelines outlined below.
SSD Special Education Schools and Programs
Ackerman School, Bridges, Litzsinger School, Neuwoehner High School, Northview High School, Southview School and Vocational Skills Program (VSP)
- Beginning November 9, 2020 – Phase 1: Family Choice Hybrid
Family choice of 2 days per week in-person learning or 100% distance learning - Beginning January 19, 2021 – Phase 2: Family Choice Full-Time
Family choice of 5 days per week in-person learning or 100% distance learning
SSD Technical High Schools
North Technical High School and South Technical High School
- Jan. 19, 2021, and Jan. 20, 2021 – Phase 1: Orientation
Students attend in person 1 day (Group A on Tuesday and Group B on Wednesday) - Beginning Jan. 25, 2021 – Phase 2: In-Person Learning 2 Days Per Week or Virtual Learning
Family choice of 2 days per week in-person learning or 100% virtual learning
- Group A will attend on Tuesday and Thursday
- Group B will attend on Wednesday and Friday
- All students and staff will participate in virtual learning on Monday
- Beginning Feb. 1, 2021 – Phase 3: 100% In-Person or Virtual Option
Family choice of 5 days per week in-person learning or virtual option for exploration programs and programs where certification does not require in-person instruction

Reopening Phases for SSD’s Special Education Schools & Programs
There are three phases of reopening for SSD’s special education schools and programs, including Bridges and the Vocational Skills Program. Click on the circles below for more information about each phase.
- Beginning November 9, 2020 – Phase 1: Family Choice Hybrid

100% Distance Learning
100% distance learning for all students attending SSD schools, sites and programs.

Phase 1: Family Choice Hybrid
Family Choice: 2 days per week in-person learning or 100% distance learning
For schools and programs in Phase 1, families will have the option for their student(s) to attend school for in-person learning two days per week with distance learning for the rest of the week, or 100% distance learning.
Students in SSD special education schools and programs will begin Phase 1 on November 9, 2020.

Phase 2: Family Choice Full-Time (Current)
Family Choice: 5 days per week in-person learning or 100% distance learning
For schools and programs in Phase 2, families will have the option for their student(s) to attend school for in-person learning five days per week or 100% distance learning.
Students in SSD special education schools and programs will begin Phase 2 on January 19, 2021.

Phase 3: 100% In-Person Learning
Five days per week in-person learning with no distance learning option
No timelines have been set for Phase 3 for SSD's special education schools or programs.
For schools and programs in Phase 3, students will return to in-person learning five days per week with no option for distance learning.

Reopening Phases for SSD’s Technical High Schools
There will be three phases of reopening for SSD’s technical high schools. Note that there are some differences between the reopening phases for technical high schools and for special education schools. Click on the circles below for more information about each phase.

100% Distance Learning
100% distance learning for all students attending SSD schools, sites and programs.

Phase 1: Orientation
Students attend in-person 1 day or virtual option
For schools and programs in Phase 1, families will have the option for their student(s) to attend school for in-person learning one day with distance learning for the rest of the week, or 100% distance learning. Students attending in-person will be divided into a Group A (attending on Tuesday) and a Group B (attending on Wednesday).
January 2021 Phased Reopening Calendar
Group A will attend January 19, 2021; Group B will attend January 20, 2021.

Phase 2: In-Person Learning Two Days Per Week or Virtual Learning
Family Choice: 2 days per week in-person learning or 100% distance learning
For schools and programs in Phase 2, families will have the option for their student(s) to attend school for in-person learning two days per week with distance learning for the rest of the week, or 100% distance learning. Students will be divided into Group A (attending on Tuesday and Thursday) and Group B (attending on Wednesday and Friday).
January 2021 Phased Reopening Calendar
Phase 2 will begin on January 25. Students in Group A will attend on Tuesday and Thursday. Students in Group B will attend on Wednesday and Friday.

Phase 3: 100% In-Person Learning or Virtual Option (Current)
Family Choice: Five days per week in-person learning or Distance Learning
For schools and programs in Phase 3, families will chose to a)return to in-person learning five days per week or b) continue 100% distance learning. Note: The virtual option is only available for exploration programs and programs where certification does not require in-person instruction.

The beginning date for Phase 3 for North and South Tech is February 1, 2021

Partner Districts
Families with students attending school in partner districts will continue to follow the reopening plans as made by their student’s home district. In districts where in-class learning has resumed, SSD will offer services in person. SSD will also continue to offer the option of receiving services virtually, in the case that a family prefers that option.
